How to get the most out of your deep tissue massage

January 24, 2017

Ready to have your very first deep tissue massage session? Deep tissue massage is a popular massage therapy. It entails the use of long, deep strokes to relax your muscles and connective tissues.

Deep tissue massage is an effective treatment for anyone experiencing chronic pain (back, neck, shoulder, etc.), limited mobility, posture issues, muscle tension / stiffness, sciatica and more. It’s particularly beneficial to athletes recovering from sports injuries.

In order to get maximum benefits from your massage session, here’s all that you should do:

Stay hydrated

Drink plenty of water before and after your session. You will experience muscle soreness or aches post-massage. Staying hydrated is important to get rid of the toxins from your muscles.

You should also drink plenty of water prior to your massage session. Staying hydrated enhances the elasticity of the connective tissues.

Avoid eating right prior to your massage session

Your body needs time to digest food. Thus, avoid eating right before your session. You should give your body at least 2 hours to digest your meal before receiving your massage.

Take a warm shower

Before going for your massage appointment, take a warm shower to loosen your muscles and relax your mind and body.

Wear comfortable clothes

Always wear loose, comfortable clothes to the massage appointment. This will make you feel relaxed. Also, it will be easier for your therapist to give you a proper massage.

Focus on your breathing

Take long, deep breathes during massage. Deep breathing helps reduce stress and promotes relaxation. If you’re not used to getting deep tissue massage, keep in mind that your massage therapist will target certain sensitive body areas. Don’t get anxious and continue breathing deeply.

After your massage session, don’t get off too quickly. You could feel light headed. Spend 5 to 10 minutes to absorb the results.

Provide adequate information to your massage therapist

If you have any injuries or health issues, tell your massage therapist before your session. It’s important to let them know any concerns, expectations and queries that you might have.

After all, your massage therapist’s main job is to help you feel comfortable. If you feel any discomfort, irritation or pain during massage, don’t be afraid to tell them.
